Coral Gables’s Nick Kyrgios ended a year of relative frustration when he lost to Karen Khachanov in a shocking quarterfinal on Friday night at the Australian Open.
The 31-year-old missed five months of action after knee surgery in 2014, where he had surgery to remove a bone spur from his left knee.
He had won only one set in his past 24 matches prior to the quarterfinals, all of which were victories. While the injury may have been an issue, he had also had a rough few-month period in his career because of it, with some unkind comments directed towards him.
Nick was taken aback by the way he had been received on court before he began the match.
A year ago, Kyrgios was a popular figure in the tennis world when he was ranked No. 1 on the ATP World Tour. He had won eight grand slam titles, and was one of the faces of the sport in the U.S.
One of the first people who spoke to him during his recovery was David Ferriere, and the two spoke frequently through the year.
Kyrgios ended up missing a little over a year’s worth of tennis because of the surgery and rehab.

Kyrgios was devastated by his loss and he spoke out about the ordeal during his final news conference as he prepared to face Novak Djokovic at the Brisbane International on Monday.
‘It’s just been a year and a half of hell. The hardest time of my life,’ he told reporters.
‘I didn’t come back feeling like myself. As time went on and I was coming back, I started getting frustrated. I didn’t feel like myself
