Serena Williams: “I’m a woman who’s been in so many different places and has the body of an 18-year-old”

CNN interviewed Serena Williams when she was 9. Here’s what she said

When Serena Williams arrived at a Los Angeles hotel last month for a two-week visit with her parents, she met with reporters while wearing a custom-made dress by New York fashion designer Michael Kors.

“I wear my hair every day,” Williams said, explaining why she wore her hair in a ponytail for the interview.

It wasn’t enough.

“It’s hard to meet people who can do what you do and be your age,” she said before pivoting to a tangent about her weight. “You have to be tough. And it’s easy to be tough when you have the body of an 18-year-old. That’s the only way I’m going to keep up to what I have to do. I’ve been in so many different places and seen more than just the best of the best. I think I’ve watched more than any other athlete in the last 10 to 15 years.”

A woman with more than two million followers on Instagram posed that question — where would she be if she could play in the WNBA? — before launching a series of tweets about her love of traveling, her love of fashion and the meaning of her name.

When it comes to Williams, the interview is a good representation of everything she’s done in the last 27 months — the ups and downs, the struggles and the highs.
