2020's Biggest Breakthroughs in Physics

This year, two teams of physicists made profound progress on ideas that could bring about the next revolution in physics. Another still has identified the source of a longstanding cosmic mystery.
1. Here’s an extremely brief version of the black hole information paradox: Stuff falls into a black hole. Over time - a long, long time - the black hole “evaporates.” What happened to the stuff? According to the rules of gravity, it’s gone, its information lost forever. But according to the rules of quantum mechanics, information can never be lost. Therefore, paradox. This year, a series of tour de force calculations has shown that information must somehow escape - even if how it does so remains a mystery.
2. Levitating trains, lossless power transmission, perfect energy storage: The promise of room-temperature superconductivity has fed many a utopian dream. A team based at the University of Rochester in New York reported that they had created a material based on a lattice of hydrogen atoms that showed evidence of superconductivity at up to about 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) - about the temperature of a chilly room. The only catch: Superconductivity at this temperature only works if the material is crushed inside a diamond anvil to pressures approaching those of Earth’s core. Utopia will have to wait.
3. A dazzling cosmic strobe has ended an enduring astronomical mystery. Fast radio bursts - blips of distant radio waves that last for mere milliseconds - have eluded explanation since they were first discovered in 2007. Or rather, astronomers had come up with far too many theories to explain what are, for the brief time they’re alight, the most powerful radio sources in the universe. But on a quiet morning in April, a burst “lit up our telescope like a Christmas tree,” said one astronomer. This allowed researchers to trace its source back to a part of the sky where an object had been shooting out X-rays. Astronomers concluded that a highly magnetized neutron star called a magnetar was behind the phenomenon.

If Hawking radiation comes from taking one half of a pair of particles that spontaneously arise at the edge of the event horizon, then wouldn't that mean the mass of the Hawking radiation is not coming from the material inside? And wouldn't it also mean that the other half of the Hawking radiation generated at the event horizon is falling into the black hole, and ADDING to its mass? How, then, would (a) the Hawking radiation contain data about the innards of the black hole or what fell into it? and (b) the black hole get smaller? I feel there is something not being correctly explained in the way they describe the reason for Hawking radiation.

Blackholes are radioactive things spinning in the middle, so fast its gravity is literally holding back light particles. Do I have proof? No, but you got to ask yourself; what is amplifying a body of matters gravity a million times more than our suns? That's my guess, a radioactive body of matter spinning faster than Oksana Baiul on ice.

So, Is it possible for us to generate a fast radio burst? Since we know how they are generated. If so, communication in the universe will be easier since travelling time of signal will be less? Many may argue that we cannot because of the power and energy that's generated at source may destroy everything around it. But hey! It's just a theory and a seed of thought that can be used by some one in our world.

    3 өдрийн өмнө

Unless I'm mistaken, which I could be, I'm just some guy after all, black holes do not emit ANYTHING. This emission they are referring to happens at the event horizon. So the way this is described is confusing to the average person who is taught that nothing can escape a black hole. Aslo, the term black hole should stop being used in favor of something else like quantum singularity or such, because again, the average person thinks of a 'black hole' as an actual hole that you can go into and travel through. Black holes are small spheres of infinitely dense matter, they're solid things.

Strange. Wouldn't it make sense that space time particles ride a wave and aren't the wave themselves? Of some kind? Particles still have to be set in a fabric to curve not intrinsically attaching itself to each other maybe? If you still get information "curving" out of a black hole. Then the particles have to be evenly fed or predictably "squashed", in order for there to be a hole. Otherwise wouldn't the hole disappear? Unless it's not a whole and actually a donut? Force has to be even in order to create a visible hole and not just a warp or a sink drain. In which case I imagine particles must be swept in on some kind of wave or underlying fabric that squashes itself around the point of highest gravity, but makes it through the edges. But some astrophycisists claim black matter may not exist. But the existence of blackholes prove that their must be a kind of background? One implies a hidden other... or maybe i'm going crazy.
