Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy's Samaritan Prop, Part 2!

Adam pushes the limits of his machining skills as he moves onto the next part of his Hellboy Samaritan prop replica build. In making the closure latch of the Good Samaritan, he has to make something that's not only aesthetically accurate, but functions as a working mechanism as well. It's going to require some precise engineering!

One thing I find hilarious with any prop making is just how much time, effort, skill, planning, and whatever else goes into something that the original maker just threw together and said "That looks cool." Like Luke's lightsaber when Star Wars first was made. The team probably thought "We have a broken handle to a Graflex. What can we add to it to make it a laser sword?" Now Graflex handles are very hard to find because fans. Just goes to show how far a little ingenuity will be appreciated by people, years (and even decades) later.

I always love Adam's attention to detail. I'm really curious now what it looks like for a prop like this to be made, as if it were on a real set. For example: instead of getting the trigger guard perfectly centered, winging it to get it close enough for the screen. Adam, would you be willing to do a one day build, where you instead focus on getting it screen ready instead of accurate? I would love to see where the corners can be cut, and where your expertise shows you that you can skip steps because they don't matter. With all your work, and especially everything you have posted to this channel, I can see love getting things to *feel* right, which I absolutely love and is what keeps inspiring me. I would just also appreciate a peek under the hood of "showbiz" model making, where the look is more important than the function. If it is not something you would enjoy doing, then please ignore this :D More than anything, I would love to hear more stories and learn more from your experience.

How would a cross, literally two pieces of wood, have been made of three types of wood? Are pine, cypress, and cedar three ideas for what it might have been made of, but nobody is sure?

    • Josh Grafman

      Josh Grafman

      7 өдрийн өмнө

I was thinking the same thing at first. While the ideas of what the wood might have been are the merest speculations of Catholic tradition, there is technically a possibility of it being made of three kinds of wood, the third piece being the sign over Jesus’ head bearing the writing of Pilate “The King of the Jews”. There is even the possibility of a fourth piece, a small block to which the feet were nailed. Again, I’m a Christian, but that whole “true cross” thing is just silly Catholic relic-worship.
