All Day Rut Treestand Myth

During the annual whitetail rut, far too many sitsbare wasted because hunters spend too much time in certain treestands at the wrong time of the day. Are you wasting all day sits on just 1 treestand? You are if a portion of the day that particular rut stand you have chosen is a dud. I encourage you to score the day. if you choose to sit in evening food source stands during the morning, and morning bedding area stands during the evening, your overall daily rut score will be very low. However, if you make certain that the stands you choose directly relate to the period of time you are hunting, then you can maintain a high score with high odds for the entire rut. To sit in 1 stand all rut long isbrarely appropriate. Have you chosen your rut stands wisely? Here is how to make sure that you have...

This is just silly. Videos like this are frustrating because they literally discourage success and give the opposite of good advice. The more time you spend in your stand the better the chance you'll get an opportunity. It's a simple as that, all else remaining equal. Hunting all day in a single stand serves the dual purpose of maximizing stand time while cutting your foot traffic in half.

What if my trail camera shows buck movement throughout the day, a lot of daylight photos from am through afternoon. I cant figure out why 85% are in one direction and are usually one and done bucks. Hunting deep woods along a creek drainage.

What do you do on public land during the peak rut when there are countless other hunters in the woods ? Can you ruin a stand when there are guys all over the place? Sometimes I sit in stands that are close to a parking lot for public land bc I see deer bedding close to the road and they watch the hunters walking right up the main trail into the public land and they don’t move until you get within feet of them

Heres a Good Question for Jeff. When is it a good time to take Does? Would you do your Buck hunting first or peg the does early and buck hunt later? Like I ask cuz Im in a unique situation with Isolated pop, and very limmited predation. If we as humans dont interven the population will crash hard.

Love your channel Jeff. I have a question regarding core vs. non core bucks. My Target buck is a 4 year old 13 point with a split G2 and Split brows. We had him on camera a bunch in the summer.... I figured he was non core since I haven't seen him since late August. Well... He just started getting daylight pics of him yesterday at multiple camera locations (on mock scrapes) throughout our 200 acres. Is it possible he is a core buck, and had very limited movements within our property. And lastly, if he continues to show up on my cell cameras, should I actively pursue him before the rut starts & begins venturing onto the neighbors. (does his activity trump weather? perhaps I should go after him regardless of weather) food plots have been unpressured and hunted minimally.

    • J E

      J E

      Сарын өмнө

If you have the does, then you already have what the big bucks want. The boys will come and start seeking your does, and not the other way around. Get set up between the two, or where the bucks will push the does too. During the pre-rut(scent checking and chase phase) the bucks won’t always go directly at the does but the mature bucks tend to use a trail that circles around the does bedding area. Big thing to focus on is not running your does off your property. If your scent is good for an approaching buck, but your scent is blowing right in to the does bedding area then you’re done. I watch deer watching neighboring hunters pull in with all their lights and loud trucks, skirt the incoming hunters and come back after the deer see the hunters trucks pull out. You can never be too cautious when it comes to entering and exiting stand sights and I always have multiple ways to access my hunting properties. Oh and pressured whitetail know where stand sights are. Especially the giant ladder stands that are darn near eye level. My experience with scent blowing over the top and dissipating away from deer within my relative kill range seems to be 22’+ feet. But it’s flat where I live so hills will very.

Massachusetts has been unseasonably warm, high 60s during the day, 50s at night. Not a lot of deer activity in the wildlife reserve where I've been hunting. But now it's cooled off; today (Sunday/no hunting allowed) is in the 40s and I think it broke freezing overnight. Finally! I'm a beginner; bought a climber but there aren't that many good trees in the area I hunt, so I tend to hunt from the ground, or from a ground blind. There are a lot of hunters and hikers pushing the deer around. I did see three does in a clearing the other day, right after the rain. They were literally 10 feet from me, but scampered into the trees before I could lift my bow.

We generally hunt till 1-2:00 o'clock and that's it for the day. The late day hunts are just too low odds and if you do see one it's low light which makes for hard shooting and turns into flashlight recoveries which are another challenge. Can't beat that morning hunt I love between 10-12 for movement. My best buck to date was shot at 11:00 a.m.

My biggest problem is always figuring out a way to pattern deer to if they're using the spot morning or evening. Like, how on earth do you tell? Even around some fields I hunt(not in the field) how can you tell if the buck is going to the field(evening) or from it(morning) on any given trail? Aside from direction of prints etc.

I've seriously benefited from this guy. October 25th and saw the first two deer in range. The hog gouged his first 4" tree and with no trail cam out, I'm getting a bit twitchy

And when you been hunting for 40 plus years you realize what he's saying is not necessarily true. Anything can happen during the rut.

Just go easy with it. Deer in every state act and have different ways. Just hunt as much as possible. Right spot at the right time is what it comes down to. Hang cameras and watch. Good luck and God bless

Starting to see the does get more aggressive on the scrape vines here in Ky, water hole is finally getting used by the entire herd, even had a small doe either try to get in or just plain fell in, she got out in a hurry I know that!!! Good luck in the next few weeks.

Really love your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Headed out to get some good sits in Buffalo county this coming week. Listening to this changed my how I was planning to sit! If you don’t mind me asking, what area of WI do you have your land?

I let my first arrow of the season go yesterday morning 7:30 on a decent 8 pointer. My best bow kill to date and it's been 15 years since Ive taken a deer with a bow. The crazy part was 15 minutes later another buck came in and tried to fight my dead buck which only went 10 yards after I shot it. What an incredible morning the rut is definitely around the corner. Thanks Jeff for all your information and hard work to help us weekend hunters be successful. Pre-rut morning hunts definitely are good right now.

I had a good shot on the second deer but he was not any bigger so I did not take it. Definitely feels good to get the monkey off my back.

So glad I found you Jeff! This is my 11 year olds first whitetail season and thanks to you I will not be making many of the mistakes I have in the past. Hopefully this will increase my sons chances. Checked our trail cam yesterday and we have 3 bucks that are showing up that we have not seen before. I have learned from you that is a good sign. One of which is a really nice 8 pointer. Also I keep my ass out of our hunting area and I think it is going to pay off. Thanks again Jeff!

Most mature big bucks are shot between 10am to 2 pm during the peak rut. Stats from hunting guides from Alberta and Saskatchewan

Yeah they always seem to come in when I start cooking breakfast. I swear they smell that and wanna come eat with ya. Shot several wall hangers while cooking. Shot two half way through my cigarette

ok Jeff I will take your advice and stay out of the woods this morning and go to Church. The weeds you refer to as goldenrod, any good for screening? it borders the parcel I'm looking at and I'm wondering how it compares to switchgrass ...thanks

Randy. Good to see somebody else was on the same page as me this morn. Jeff has some real good vids on switchgrass plantings i would watch. The problem with golden rod is that as soon as u get a wet snow it lays flat and is pretty much ineffective for cover or screening. Switchgrass can withstand the elements
