Das Boat S2:E05 Big Mouth Buffalo with Ryan Callaghan and Miles Nolte

In this episode, MeatEater's Ryan Callaghan and Miles Nolte travel to Minnesota to learn more about, and even try to catch, big mouth buffalo. The guys build a raised casting platform on Das Boat, using supplies scavenged from the trash heap behind a local hardware store. After that, they meet Alec Lackmann, the world’s foremost expert on a fish that few people care about. Alec studies big mouth buffalo in the Detroit Lakes area and has discovered some fascinating facts about these fish: First, they live a long time. No one actually knows just how long, but the oldest specimen he’s dated was 112. Second, in the Detroit Lakes, and probably other places as well, these fish have not consistently reproduced in over 80 years. Cal and Miles tag along with Alec to help release some buffalo that he was studying in a capture pen; he fills them in on why these are such cool fish; Miles tries-unsuccessfully-to catch one of these octogenarian fish in the lake; and then they sit down with some local bow fishers to share a conversation and some beer. From there, Cal and Miles head over to the Mississippi River to try their luck on a population of river buffalo that don’t get hunted with bows and are successfully reproducing. They cap off the episode with a delicious meal of fried sucker balls. #fueledbynature

"The bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus) is a fish native to North America, and it is in decline." I thought they were carp, which are invasive from asia and europe. the native fish should not be killed. regs should be placed on that.

Knowing what is in invasive carp versus a non-invasive carp is an important conversation. Common carp are non-invasive and are quality fish to pursue on a a fly. Yes, they are non-native, but so are the rainbow and brown trout we enjoy to fish for as well. Bowfishing is fun, but is destructive to almost any ecosystem due to overhunting and loose regulations mentioned by grouping fishing into to categories (gamefish vs. non-gamefish). I've personally seen countless lakes around me become desolate wastelands...no more bass, common carp, catfish, gar, etc.

Thank you for this excellent episode and for featuring Alec Lackmann's important work on life history of the Bigmouth Buffalo. For anyone who is looking to learn more about bowfishing (origins, growth, status, tournaments), the species often targeted in the USA (buffalo, gars, bowfin, carps [native and invasive], paddlefish, stingrays), and what state agencies can do to begin managing bowfisheries more responsibly... feel free to check out our forthcoming paper titled "Bowfishing in the United States: history, status, ecological impact, and a need for management" Here's a link to access the paper- www.researchgate.net/publication/343610758_Bowfishing_in_the_United_States_History_Status_Ecological_Impact_and_a_Need_for_Management#fullTextFileContent

@Tyler Winter Also managers have to learn from this example so that they start taking responsibility to gather data on all native species so that they can make informed decisions prior to blanket legalization of stuff. How they can allow unregulated and unlimited harvest on almost all these native species across many states, without data to back it up, is beyond reason, especially when invasive species are already such a problem and becoming worse (Asian carp). Is the goal to open up the environment so that invasives can move in? Does not make sense.

Thanks for posting the paper. I am glad to see research on this topic. It seems the first step is getting managers to acknowledge the number of native fish taken by archery. Once managers appreciate the impact they'll take the correct actions.

As a Florida fisherman, you need to move fast on Buffalo management or it's going to go the way of our Goliath grouper down here. They weren't a popular food fish but they were an easy catch for a long time so people overfished them. They went endangered and got full protection. Now there are Goliaths on every wreck and the challenge is getting your bait and catch past them to enjoy fishing for other species that don't have the same legal protections. Once a fish gets on the endangered species list, it's a nightmare getting them off even when the population has recovered and all you have then is a nuisance fish, full of ego from its legal protection, that you can't do anything about but let it go to harass your fishing another day.

Redhorse, buffalo, and other suckers are some of the best eating fish out there. But ground and made into fish patties? Sacrilege. Scaled or fleeced, filleted, scored, breaded & deep-fried is the way to go. You can still get fried buffalo in some of the taverns along the middle Mississippi Riverm but it's not nearly as popular as it once was. And yes- I will eat redhorse suckers over flathead catfish or crappie, any day of the week. Kill the carp, but respect the suckers!

Kind a hard to fish for a target species that eats plankton that’s really hard to put on a hook

Being from south Louisiana, it's always strange to see how tiny the northern Mississippi river is.
