Doctor Mike and Mortician React To “Six Feet Under”

Caitlin Doughty is the creator behind the MNmore channel “Ask A Mortician” where she normalizes death and educates her audience about what happens after… well… you know. Being the brilliant mortician she is, I thought it would make a lot of sense for us to not react to a medical drama, but a death drama, so we watched HBO’s Six Feet Under. Despite my years of medical training and experience, there isn’t a lot I know about what happens to the human body after it dies, so Caitlin enlightened me to things such as what happens to prosthetics, the smells of a mortuary, and what happens to your various orifices.

I have always had a love and fascination for the dead. I found Caitlin a few years ago, and she truly is a wonderful and unique soul. I work in a funeral home, and will eventually go into mortuary school. You'd be AMAZED at how many families are comforted by honesty and lightheartedness when it comes to handling their loved one's funeral.

First and only time i saw a body was pretty traumatic to be honest. My family got a call that a family member had died. the day after (they decided to have the body there until the next day), we went to a memorial visit kind of. I was about 12 years old, hadnt had much experience with death at that point. But i expected to walk in, family sitting there, some food and conversation about the deceased. I went there straight after school, so i rode my bike there. walked in, and as soon as i opened the door, in the tight hallway was the casket with the dead person in it. The hall was so narrow that i had to lean over the casket to walk past it. Because the person had been dead for a day or so without anything done to him, the face was horrible to look at. Mouth wide open, something you would see in a horror film imo. As a 12 year old that unexpected view of a dead person gave me such a fright that i will not see another dead person ever again. A few years later when my grandfather died i refused to come with the family to view the body after. and even now when im an adult and lost my grandma, i refused. i still remember the shock, the smell and the real terror i had when i saw the first dead person. i still remember gathering around the body while saying goodbye, and i felt sick to my stomach, got dizzy and had to leave the room before i fainted. Horrible horrible experience

Working in a hospital, I think is best when visiting a loved one or decorating their rooms to include personal photos of what they looked like before they were sick if they approve. No one looks like themselves when I'll and in the hospital. The pictures help see the patient for who they really are, not the injury or illness. I wouldn't mind my loved one (not embalmed per say) but restored to their true selves before they go.

She has a very calming way of explaining death and the death process and she does it in a way that is respectful of culture and religious beliefs and no question is a stupid question. She answers them all. Great collaboration. Thank you!

Omg I also lost my mom while in school and I had to ID the body. It was like looking at a stranger, I really just felt numb the only parts that I could recognize were the tattoos my mom had because dead bodies just look so different. I'm jealous that they allowed u access to cadavers after hours though with being a first DVM student during COVID-19 we don't get access to the cadavers outside of lab time.

It was not comforting to see my dad's dead body. For months I dreamed that he was still alive on the gurney, and just trapped inside his body, like in a deep comatose. And if I had just tried CPR I I could've saved him (even though he had been dead for a couple hours before we found him). Maybe if the EMTs had closed his eyes, that would've helped..

The ads in the first episode of SFU, according to the creator in the DVD commentary, were his satirical take on real-life ads of the day, like the Gap dancing ads and that sort of thing: Like, what if funeral home industry products advertised the same way as big name brands and stores did? (They do advertise, just not on TV. They advertise in trade magazines and at trade shows the general public doesn't really see).

Hi!! I'm a 2nd year med student and just wanted to add something to this topic: in my uni, the anatomy labs have long stopped using formaldahyde as a preserving agent and use a chemical called Thiel instead, which has a MUCH better smell. My mom told me horror stories about how she and her fellow med students used to get sick from the smell of formaldahyde, to the extent of throwing up sometimes, so i was very relieved when i walked into the dissection room and barelt smelled anything!! 😅😅 Also, Dr Mike i absolutely love u, and often use your vids as some sort of unofficial revision!!

I appreciate that the two of you took the time to discuss the disconnect or catharsis one might feel when faced with the body of a loved one. My best friends aunt recently passed away, and one of her final requests was for my friend to be the one to do her hair and makeup for her funeral. She asked if I would go with her, and of course I said yes. We were a little concerned our request would be denied by the funeral home, since we live right in the middle of Conservative Christian Kentucky, but luckily they were more than understanding and accommodating. I'm about to enter Mortuary School in the spring, and have always been very death positive, but this was my first experience with an actual corpse outside of a funeral, so I was super nervous, as was my friend. There were understandably a few tears and anxiety at first, but by the time we were finished we were laughing and cutting up like we weren't in the middle of prettying up her dead aunt. It was such an amazing experience, and it helped both of us grieve and begin to heal. I've always wanted to open a funeral home in my area that focuses on each families personal experience with death and allows them to incorporate aspects of funerals in the past that aren't common anymore like washing the body, fixing hair and makeup, and having wakes and burials in or on the property of the family home as allowed by law. Thank you for making it your mission to normalize death, dying, and grief, and thank you for inspiring me to do the same.

What Caitlin said about how dead bodies of loved ones look to people reminded me of when my maternal grandfather died back in March of '09. He was going to be cremated, and my Aunt Kathy had asked to see his body before they put it into the furnace. We all went in there so she could do and say what she needed to, and it was so surreal. He didn't look different at all. He looked like he was sleeping, as if he would open his eyes from his nap any moment, look over at us, and smile. He didn't look like how I expected; he looked *better* than I expected, and that was comforting to me. It was very much a relief, especially after the hard grieving I did when I got the news.
