So mamy snowflakes not realizing zoos help raise awareness against actual animal cruelty that happens daily in the wild. Poaching and natural habitat destruction are why these animals are in danger of going extinct. Before long if not for the education zoos provide, the only place to see these animals would be a zoo.

It's awfully suspicious.. this guy said, went it be funny, if one of these Gorillas broke the glass? Then guess what... 🙄😳☹️ I hope the zoo views the security footage!! No, they said it was Elk glue which is more for puncture resistance due to their antlers. Elk glue clearly states, & is colored clear as well, that Elk glue should in no way be used to resistant direct force unlike gorilla glue. Make sure application matches glue specific type. @Ray Navarrette I wish I _were_ wrong. SOME people want to learn about them. Some people want to learn about modal logic, too. The small dividend your service pays is nowhere near adequate offset to the cost in suffering. You may mean well, but you're still actively part of a system that's perpetuating a problem. If intention were a currency, we'd all be well off. Pray tell, how much do zoos actually discourage bush-meat practices? They don't seem to be doing it financially, beyond any sort of nominal Gov't subsidized write-off that's just enough to earn them the right to print their talking-point claims about 'helping' on the merch. Oh, so you must mean the inspiration thing, then? Our bright future! The affluent suburbanites who visit zoos barely want to pay their taxes, let alone fix third-world malaria or human starvation, and you think those chubby kids in the $300 strollers are going to grow up and stop illegal hunting someday? Seeing a novel curiosity is not something to conflate with motivation; those kids' attentions are focused right back on their tablets on the ride home-with that giant WWF plush panda that 'helps stop deforestation' behind them in the SUV on its way to Goodwill next week. If you believe that we are _not_ presently amidst a culture of entitlement, then you and I are pretty far apart. Sorry to be so nasty cynical; I'd be one of those people asking you about them if I were there, but I've developed an ethical problem with the practice following consideration of it. Not of zoos though, of primate prisons (fish and reptiles have not much up there). One more thing: I don't blame or condemn you; I just ask that you be honest about what's happening and why. Maybe that's a pathway to fixing it. Maybe you could even question some of the handlers there, and start to pull apart at some of their rationalizations enough to get them to consider the zoo's real motivation-or even the state of the world ecology-with a slightly less rosy optimism. The case now is too serious to keep being happy and complacent. We won't fix destructive consumerism by constructing consumptive enterprises.

You couldn't be more wrong about people wanting to learn about them. I volunteer at the L.A. Zoo watching over our Orangutans and Gorillas and get educated questions and concerns for their plight all the time. It 's through this assignment that I seize the opportunity to share as much information as I can about them. Plus the whole reason we even have "Orangutan Watch," is to keep people in check when they think it's funny to throw things or shout at them. Plus bush meat among the Great Ape populations is big business whether you label it marketing or not.

    • pocket83²

      pocket83²

      14 өдрийн өмнө

@Ray Navarrette That's a nice sentiment, but it's also a bit out of touch. Let's drop the marketing: those visitors weren't inspired. They aren't there to learn, either; it's a carnival. There is both a literal wall and a psychological barrier between them. Kids and adults alike poke at them and make faces, treating them as an 'other' that doesn't deserve the same type of natural freedom that we enjoy. To these kids, the shattered glass demonstrates the fact that the creatures are 'animals,' which are separate from us, and far too barbaric to enjoy or appreciate liberty. The mindset created here is even more dangerous than any receding natural habitat, since the former is the cause of the latter. A primate 'zoo' is still a euphemism for a prison. Even if it's not intentional on our part, because we don't destroy their habitats deliberately, these are still innocent prisoners. And the most disturbing fact remains: they are our cousins.

The differences between us are so small. What a tragedy that we lock up our fellow primates. And for what? To entertain our kids? We should know better now; in terms of cognition, these things are thinking creatures who are nearly as aware as we are. In fact, most of the drooling morons on this side of the glass are only barely their equals. You want to cite 'our' inventiveness, which marks the difference? Tell me, what have _you_ invented? We're just better copycats. Fish and reptiles know no difference, and even most mammals can be given a comfortable enclosure. But primates, especially the great apes, suffer over imprisonment. Ape zoos are not educational. They're just examples of selfish, consumerist barbarism. In the case of the Chimpanzee, it's downright criminal. Rethink this practice.

I’m wondering if people wearing masks has anything to do with the gorillas acting differently? I mean, I’m sure they can sense things are different in the world, 2020 has been a crap year for everyone, right? Interacting with their handlers every day, seeing guests wearing masks...gorillas aren’t stupid, they know the world is crazy, and one things animals want is consistency. In my 20 years living in San Diego, I’ve never heard of this happening, not once (maybe it has and I’ve just missed the news, usually word gets out about these types of things though, especially when it comes to the zoo). I dunno, seems like the world has just flipped upside down, and seeing this type of thing just reiterates how far reaching that really goes. 🙃😶 of course, I’m just speculating, but it would be interesting to know if there’s any science behind whether or not animals are actually influenced by their environment in this way.

@August S SeaWorld sells masks. I would assume the zoo does as well. 🤷‍♀️ we haven’t been back to the zoo in a couple of months, but I would think they do. And yah, I would agree, especially if the animals have been acting differently. I could easily see the zoo selling masks even if they know it’s affecting animal behaviors, just because they’ve talked about how much money they’ve lost this year repeatedly. But, honestly, I’m not sure, maybe this is “normal” behavior and just so happens to be a coincidence? This year is weird.
