Klatt is the only CFB talking head worth half a s*it. Really. He just says it how it is and without the blatant bias that all these old players have. He's right. The CFB Playoffs has hurt CFB. There are 4 elite programs, about 3 that fluctuate in and out of that sphere, about 5 that are a notch below elite and then the rest. The playoffs has only made the wealthy wealthier. The gap between the elite programs and the notch below is a MASSIVE gulf. They take all the talent. Michigan, Auburn and Notre Dame had top-10 recruiting classes? Cool, OSU, Bama and Clemson finished in the top-3 and have 15 more 5* players than them. Year after year after year. That along with the hyperspread making defense entirely useless is killing CFB.

Darnold is worth a flier somewhere else, but Colin has always been a Darnold suck up-like everybody from USC. He thought Darnold would be amazing out of college,& he hasn't.Granted, he's in the worst spot possible-considering organization, coaching staff,& surrounding talent. But some of it is on him. He was over rated,& underachieving in college. Colin is just dying for him to turn it around somewhere, cuz like Skip-he almost never admits he was wrong. If they like a guy, they bend over backwards to make excuses,(even if some are valid),& if they dont like somebody, its the exact opposite. I admit it seems like I was also wrong on Herbert, though I'm not putting anybody in Canton, over 5 or 6 games. Ive seen too many guys like Rick Mirer-tear it up year 1,& be exposed after theres more tape,& "a book on them," after the 1st year. But so far, he looks great. As for Darnold-he still has value,& you could get something for him, but it's not gonna be a ton,& certainly not as much as Colin thinks.

Joel Klatt - You say that recruiting classes are continually better for the teams that have success at the highest level, it is absolutely true. You must also mention how the teams got there at the first place. Clemson had that transformation when Dabo Swinney took over. A smaller college than the other big guns like Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma etc., they didn't have the athletic department budget to compete. They have found recruiting success based on a few factors which were developed over the years - consistency, excellent coaching, great facilities and great culture. It would be unfair to discredit their success because of the college football model we have currently. They built themselves to compete in this model year after year.

Klatt brings up a great point about the damage the CFP has done to the way college football is consumed. A great example is Penn State. In three straight years (2016, 2017, 2018) PSU beat Ohio State by 3 in Happy Valley, lost to Ohio State by 1 at the Shoe, then lost to Ohio State by 1 in Happy Valley. In both losses, PSU held a two score lead over the Buckeyes early before choking the game away in the closing minutes. Yet the fact that OSU is a perennial CFP darling (most egregiously in 2016, when the Nittany Lions won the Big 10 beating OSU head-to-head, but OSU got the nod and was shut out by Clemson in the CFP) has undermined how impressive those close games were. No one even seems to remember them because ultimately they didn't change who went to the playoff, so who cares? If you're not a fan of the Big 10, we can go to the SEC: In 2017, Auburn essentially beat up the eventual champion Tide (who leapfrogged three teams with convincing cases to deserve the fourth spot) in the Iron Bowl. No one cares because Alabama got to the dance and won it anyway. (Of particular note here is that the Tigers lost to undefeated UCF in their bowl game, and UCF was left out of the playoff because they "couldn't have beat any of those teams." Any given Saturday.)

What sets Klatt apart from the rest of the pack of football analysts is that he went out of his way to pause the show to critique his own opinion on Herbert. Colin was halfway thru his monologue and Joel insisted on acknowledging Herbert's skills as a pro. To be fair, it's still early but I am a huge Oregon fan and I am rooting for Herbert to break the Chargers out of their losing ways.

Klatt just summed up the Big12 for the last 15 years that no one outside of it seems to understand. It is so freaking hard to defend Big12 spread offenses. West Virgina, Baylor, Oklahoma, OK State, Texas Texas, Texas, TCU all run spread offenses and put up 30 points a game. The ball is normally thrown in about 2.5 seconds. No defensive lineman can get to the QB in that amount of time. The SEC is seeing the Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach effect this year and doesn't know how to stop it just like the Big12. Football is a numbers game. If the defense puts seven guys in the box, the offense passes outside. If the defense puts six guys in the box, the offense runs the ball. How to stop it? Your corners have to be awesome in one on one coverage so you can put seven defenders in the box and force the pass and get a 50 percent incompletion rate.

Over the past 20 years through five head coaches the Ducks have averaged 9.4 wins a season, have won the Pac-12 and a NY6 bowl six times, won their first Heisman, won the first ever playoff game (59-20 against a Florida State team that had a 29 game winning streak coming into the game, having won the previous national championship with a Heisman trophy winning QB at the helm) and played in two national championship games. They aren't Alabama or Ohio State or Clemson but they also aren't a flash in the pan. During those 20 years their recruiting class average rankings were in the mid 20's. Now with Cristobal at the helm bringing an SEC mindset to the PAC 12 and recruiting top ten classes for the first time in Oregon history (last year #7 this year currently #3) they are on a trajectory to potentially be the next Clemson. In Cristobal's second season the Ducks won the PAC-12 and the Rose Bowl.

With how this season is playing out I'd like to see him land in Atlanta with the Falcons, and get them a refreshing new start with a real Franchise QB, and with great weapons for him to come into. So they can draft Lawrence #1 or 2, and then spend the rest of the draft getting an making ur defense and O Line better, and add who they can in free agency to grab the best player they can or a few for their defense, and ATL will be back contending for a Division Title again and for the future!!!! Hed fit great with ATL and can prolly sit a year or half the season behind Matt Ryan in his final year and learn under him and come in ready and prepared like Mahomes did!!! I don't want to see him be forced to go to dis functional Giants team, if they take him and relent off Daniel Jones cuz he's close to being a bust, and there's the other NY team who's dysfunction is worse in the Jets, but I think Darnold is a good franchise QB if u get him protection, and find him and land him some REAL WEAPONS OFFENSIVELY WHICH IS WHAT HE HASN'T HAD SO FAR WITH THE JETS.. Chargers. got their guy, and I really would hate to see him go to Washington tho they are getting better. I think the Falcons draft Lawrence, bolster their O LINE AND DEFENSE IN THE REST OF DRAFT AND FREE AGENCY, AND U COULD EVEN PUT MATT RYAN OUT THERE AND SEE WHAT THEY CAN GET TO BOLSTER THEIR DEFENSE AND LINE EVEN MORE WITH SEEING WHAT THEY CAN GET FOR RYAN, AND THEIR WILL BE TEAMS WHO HAVE GOOD DEFENSES AND O LINE AND A COUPLE WEAPONS LIKE THE COLTS WHO. WOULD TAKE. HIM BECAUSE THEY READY TO. WIN. NOW AND RYAN IS YOUNGER AND BETTER THEN PHILLIP RIVERS. LET'S GO FALCONS, LAND UR NEXT FRANCHISE. QB AND GET TREVOR LAWRENCE!!!!

@Jason Boness They had maybe three dry years changing coaches after Chip Kelly left but you are right...they appeared in TWO Title Games

@K Will Oregon had one of the highest win ratios of the last decade with multiple Rose Bowl wins, other major bowl wins, and 2 Nattys. Klatt is an i***t.

Joel Klatt is an idiot. You sir, are exactly making the point that we need to expand the playoff to 8. Power 5 conferences get conference champion automatically, add an independent if needed then 2 extra bids. It's not rocket science.
