Justin Bieber #2 and Ariadne grande #3 is this archtype mainstream forgettable pop crap music that pushes zero buttons inside me. Zero, nada. Might be well produced but that’s it already. Probably this is music targeted to 14 years old while am turning 40 this year.

I think there is a lot of great music being made today not much of it is in the charts ( there is some) which I find over produced with record companies repackaging their own songs cause you can't get sued if you own it.

What I love most about Rick is he just couldn't care less for this bullshit boomer 'today's music sucks' mentality. He's just a pro who can assess and make a decision based off of that. I probably wouldn't give the majority of these songs the time of day but he's now made me wanna check out each one - from the songwriting and arrangement right through to the mix and mastering.

I think the big problem with this list was how many of them drag. I'm ready acknowledge that there are interesting ideas and great melodies in these songs, but they just all drag. Levitating was only one that seamed to be going somewhere. In isolation I might have more tolerance for them.

I love your comments Rick, but why to all these pieces these days sound pretty much the same? Pop songs from the classic era seemed to have greater creative variation than they do now. Methinks I'm missing something.

It's because only the superb and great songs from the "classic" era have stood the test of time... Same goes for painting, architecture, you name it. 99% of the stuff you listen to on the radio won't be listened to in ten years

Some decent composition on the SZA track, but like the rest there’s no real core musical idea of any substance. Sentimental mewling over rote chord progressions. The Dua Lipa track holds up. That’s a great, immediate pop album people will “get”, and dance to, in 20-30 years time.

that vocal style on the beginning Bieber song is just so played. I can't tell when it's him or the 20 other dudes who do the same half whispering thing with the short "yu" "wid yu", there are like 100 songs that sound exactly like that. It's just so, so dull. Same thing with the Ariana Grande. She is a very talented person but that closed mouth whisper thing, not sure if it's supposed to be R&B or what, but damn this crap has been played for like 6 years already.

I think music is music. People are surprised that Rick likes these tunes. It’s still the same story I’d imagine. Someone sits on their bed and plays chords on a guitar. They find a nice progression and develop a melody over it. Then the studio takes over and other session guys add parts. Then they’re edited, condensed and given effects, dropped and panned to death and you get a hit. It’s especially good it a talented singer with good phrasing and tone is able to make it fly where needed. I’d love to be a music producer Rick , any intern jobs going? Need someone to make your tea? 🙂👍

Although I abhor the state of current pop music, I largely agree with Rick Beato’s analysis for most of these tracks (especially the ‘Driver’s License’ song and the excellent production on the Justin Bieber track, other than the disproportionately high placement of the kick drum in the mix). However, I actually enjoyed the instrumental aspect of the Ariana Grande song the most, as the strings (or synth strings) and chord progression evoked a quasi-baroque feel. Unfortunately, current vocal and lyrical sensibilities, lack of flourishes or authenticity, as well as the monotonous and contrived melancholy inherent in almost all current pop tracks unnerve me, as always.

Wow Rick, you're something else man. The way you can pick up these chords and transpose them to guitar is nothing short of genius. You must have perfect pitch. I like how you credit production too. Everyone in the world is super impressed with Billie Eilish and I'm like yeah her brother is extremely talented. Lol nah she's great too but I give her bro more credit. Man, I'd love to chill with you for a couple hours. You seem like such an awesome person. Bless you brutha. I know it's been a rough time for you.

Any of those songs could have been done by any of the other "artists" and I don't think anybody would even know the difference. To me it says something when the most glowing endorsement offered is that it has "great production". With the technology available today, every song should have great production. Everything I heard on this video was lifeless and dull. There is great music being made today. Just don't go looking for it in any top 10 lists.

I'm fascinated with your ear -- I've been a lead & rythmn guitarist for over 35-years myself, and I don't always catch (..and nail!) the progressions like you do. I guess it's that "growing up in a house with constant live music", and your Aunt, eh? Good stuff man, you've got some serious chops. I enjoy listening to different genres than my mainstay also, to analyze how they were done.

I don’t know where else to write this but Rick if you could do the 20 best fade out songs that would be awesome. I just listened to My Old School and wish that song jammed for another 20 minutes. This all comes about after the Steve Lukather interview which brought up fade outs. So many great songs that would start getting good only to fade out leaving you wanting more unlike today’s stuff

Rick, there was definite creativity, but the over production of the voals on many of these songs is past the point of painful. Maybe it s because I cringe when anything is off key or butchered, but I'd rather hear reverb than pro-tools.
