I didn’t really know of Olivia besides hearing her in one or two songs in the new high school musical the musical show and she’s very talented obviously and also super young and gorgeous and already successful, basically perfect and the opposite of me in every way. So, I went into this video truly wanting to dislike the song, which is shameful and petty and selfish, but I ended up crying my eyes out, involuntarily. I tried to stop it but the lyrics and the distressing emotion behind her voice really got to me and the tears and snot just kept leaking out of my face, explicitly without permission. It was a strange experience. I can’t remember the last time an artist’s emotions behind a song made me full on ugly cry, not without me at least somewhat mentally prepared to get emotional. This song genuinely made my heart hurt for her, it was like I was being swallowed up by her grief and then a few seconds later also my own. I didn’t know where these emotions were coming from at first but then I remembered that I’ve felt the kind of despair and hopelessness that comes after first-love heartbreak. Teenage/young adult heartbreak and emotional pain is tenfold than at any other time, just awful. I hope she’s got a good, healthy support system with family and friends to help her.
