The TRUTH about Buying a CATAMARAN. Don't be LIED TO..

Thank you to our patrons for supporting this video. This video was not sponsored and is purely my own opinion. I wonder at the size and agility of the cat which has been placed amongst the pigeons.
This video took quite a bit of work to pull together, we did about 10 revisions and I'm still not 100% happy with it but it goes a long way towards describing what I think is a good and safe multihull sailing philosophy.

Sailing La Vagabonde the sailing show that isn't really about sailing and is more like the Kardashians hanging out on a boat... Can you all do me a favour and share this to every sailing group and forum on the planet. Worked my clacker off getting this one done and also its the best advice I can possibly give. Lowkey trying to change an industry lol.

You rock Chief!! Thanks for waiting until you had the memories in the miles before you speak of advice for us first steppers and on lookers in the midst of considerations, in my observation your humbleness is much appreciated and for the reserved deservedly worthy self acknowledgements I see in the eyes much congratulations to you! Thanks and glad to be a fan of your guy's commune. As for what I wish in a follow up Video is the comparison not in exact but in experience of the Mono to the CAT and the Vaga's numbers in of the three important one's you mentioned. I know you did a video on Mono vs CAT which is awesome but it is really nice to see you reiterate in reference to give even us repeated viewer a base to refer too with like a visual of the sails set at your single hand comfort to achieve that consistent 6 knots and to mention the not obvious to us novices what is the top speed of Vaga that you hit with sails at 80 or 60% and at what knots did you first feel a bit apprehensive with the family below and single handling on the CAT compared to the MONO, hope this wouldn't put you in a spot with the CAT Company if you felt safer in the MONO at higher performing speeds or do you feel safer in the CAT. Also with regard to pushing the weight and you mention 20 tons vs 10 tons does the loaded weight make a noticeable difference or is the additional tons or < than a ton a nominal part of the equation in relation to the three numbers that are good to know (ie the water surface contact difference between no load and living load) to weigh everything at the beginning upon an before a first boarding is of course a cool thing to do for a baseline understanding but not after you have moved in for years LOL) You guys are the best so much more I want to learn from you can't Thank You enough!! Slainte and keep enjoying those horizons an that Iodine Air for us !!! Mike SF

@Cal B. I agree. 5 or 20 knots only becomes really important if you hit something like a log or container in the middle of the night etc and go flying off the boat etc... That is a safety factor but it's the same for all boats in that respect.

@Mark Gray I agree with you. What I was trying to say (poorly) was more about speed being a factor (and I think it is), but speed should certainly not be the only factor, or the most important.

mate, you are a legend. but just a perspective of some of your viewers, that I may represent or not, but definitely a point of view: please concentrate on your travels, on your life and on your journey s and less on a narrow and very specific political agenda, re "climate change", "sustainability" and other obvious lefties (or "liberal" as American call them) agenda that may be trendy and "in" but doesn't look good when lectured onboard a 2mil dollar yacht...people are predicting "the end of the world" or the "end of life as we know it" since the beginning of time...its all rubbish. you cannot feed the billions and billions of people around the world with spearfishing nor can you provide jobs, electricity, prosperity and the level/quality of life that people in the west enjoy, with the wind, or the sun or other"renewable" rubbish. I know it sound good and definitely good for some business to be seen as "doing something for the environment" or other buzz words that generate lots of "likes", but not practical on a global scale.

This video is obviously very good. Great, essential information and well produced sound, footage - Just pro. You should be very proud of this, Riley. So... Mass produced cats aren't any good? They are certainly more affordable, and I think to many people affordable means obtainable. To me this seems to be the case, since a cat from Outremer will simply never be obtainable for someone like me. And then it becomes a case of walking away from the blue water dream or going for the budget cats such as Lagoons. The answer is monohull it seems.

This is spot on Riley. You have experiences outside that of most your sofa-surfing viewers, and while the pretty islands and diving in blue waters are great entertainment and escapism for many, perhaps a small percentage of those viewers will be inspired enough to make the opportunity and actually take some steps towards a nautical lifestyle. This nuts and bolts of boats chat, sharing your thoughts and views, is perhaps not so viewable as other aspects of your channel, but it is very useful and appreciated.

Thanks Riley for the candour! For me and my partner its a balance between comforts and safety/performance - I guess we all decide trying to get that balance. I like cats because for me they strike that balance that I and my partner are looking for - creature comforts, stable at anchor, faster through the water to make more of the daylight.

Nicely done Riley...I'm still skeptical on the cat stability to mono argument comparing of course similar cruising objectives and size of crew. Experienced crew makes a world of difference when it come to the panic factor and boat trim adjustments. Racers tend to have a much higher threshold for panic in steep following seas than would a novice. As you have experienced more experienced crew makes sailing in rough conditions easier with much less worry and panic. Yes, pick your boat be it cat on mono very carefully given the intent. That was a very good point Riley. Too many boat shows are geared for certain levels of comfort and that maybe their only point of sale while some of the more experienced yacht brokers and sales people will ask a lot of questions of the potential buyer. There is a giant difference in a McGregor and a Halberg Rassey both float and both sail but their intended function is quite different, fortunately so is the price and most times that is the guiding difference but NOT always. Too often budget and dreams don't always align or give way to good boat buying decisions. I'm very glad you took this one on and you did a good job bringing these issues forward. There is a lot to digest especially for new budding adventurers.

And that was a good reason for a lot of people not to follow your channel anymore a little bit too glamorous sometimes I will try to follow your channel again and I hope to see more of this type and the way that it is presented of videos have a good one Riley this is a good step the right way welcome back

Thoughtful & respectful - anyone offended is not worth worrying about. I sail a mono as quarter the price and at least as safe. Forget trying to change the floating home dynamic, it's the only way most folks get started (then learn evolve etc as you have). Those complaining about 'sexism' have to look at the numbers. Anyone (LGBT++ etc) can/ should be able to do what they want but huge % more men sail/ buy boats than women. IDK why. Most adult males are straight & at least want to be/ stay married/ partnered. Market must respond to that, or we'd all be solo-sailing rebuilt wooden pilot cutters.

Love this one, and I’m a monohull wooden boat guy. Perception vs. Reality. It is so important to know how your boat will actually perform and to dig into the calculations. I’m a fan of Lin and Larry Pardey and they dig into this stuff heavily, what people think they need for comfort on their boat, how big of a boat they think they need vs what is actually needed and reasonable cost wise. Sail area to displacement ratio is an important one to know how your boat will fare in light conditions. Keep them coming!

I’m thinking on what catamaran would be better. My think is: a 40 performer would be as expensive as a 45 cruising. And a 45 cruising would have the interior as a 50 performer. Then should we compare a 50 performer vs a 40 cruising? In this scenario is still faster the performer? I’m not sure wich is the best decision for a blue sailing world trip with the family even if I love sailing and speed.

Jump to about 10:00 and he'll start talking about specifics. The title's insufficient too. It's about buying a cat for ocean travel, not for what most people do with their recreational vessels. Three minutes of information squeezed into 22:32. 'If that's your design parameters...'. Grammar, mate. Unfortunately, it's a ramble. If only he wrote up a few salient points. :-(

Main question(s)...what's your max speed without wind? What's your diesel burn-rate whilst keeping cool? I'm a princess...still... What's your (annual) upkeep on sails/halyards/diesel devices/mechanics/ ? Their failure rate? AC motors "never" fail.

Bold name, dramatic opening and great cinematography (as usual)... but did you really “ruffle some feathers”? Not sure.. is it a revelation that production charter cat is built around king-size beds and interior volume and that would sacrifice performance? Nah.. same applies to the charter-focused monohull btw. Also seems there is another missing aspect (on top of design parameters) of built quality/ systems setup/redundancy required for the blue water sailing vs great charter boat. This is where, I think, things can get interesting.... good luck, flat seas & following winds

This is an interesting vid - there's a lot of monohull die-hards out there. I've never sailed a cat. Couple things I could have used more info on - the safety paradox: you didn't go as deep into the pros and cons of cats vs. monohulls as I was hoping for. Also, I noticed on a recent vid that E has started experiencing seasickness. This is something I've started to struggle with too, and am worried it's going to continue to get worse and limit my ability to explore. I have heard cats are better for stability and therefore sickness, but does it really matter once you're in open ocean? Will people prone to it just be sick either way? Thanks!

Causality (also referred to as causation,[1] or cause and effect) is influence by which one event, process, state or object (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process, state or object (an effect)[2] where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause.

Not always your biggest fan but really great take on you, the industry and boat design. You have clearly surpassed the 10,000 hr milestone and earned the privilege to share your thoughts. Soiled work and big thanks.

Great stuff mate, tks for making this. Perhaps you have done this already but have you covered times where you thought your cat was in trouble in heavy weather and how you addressed it.

Thank you for the insight 🙂 I love the ocean although I get sea sick... Any secrets you can share as you're always on the ocean? I've tried a lot and the ones that work make me sleep 🤦‍♀️ which defeats the point...

Great video and you’re speaking from experience. Loved the part about the Norwegian broker refusing to sell you that boat.

I think you tried to explain the performance vs comfort equation, but you didn’t say what would be ideal for you after all your experiences. So what is it Riley?

I thought this video was awesome. I originally followed you as my wife and I plan to live on a boat at some point. Though we are not planning on navigating the world, your insite on living on the water has answered many questions. I love all the technical, nerdy stuff!!!

I was determined to listen to the equations and maybe understand them but then the music got me. So what came after the oooahh oooha ooooaha? Some interesting stuff. We got buyers asking about our boat and all they wanted to know was how big are the cockpit cushions. Hang on, we're they just taking the mickey?

Hello Riley - good on ya for giving it a go. It is a massive topic with multiple perspectives. You should have shown the Gunboat 4 fully foiling cruising cat (and the capsize video) compared to the Mooring 40 with a forward facing sliding door and the dangers of each. As with each purchase it depends on what you are buying it for. I totally agree that performance once tasted is hard to shake. Having done passages on a monohull that sails like a dead whale with stick compared to a sportboat which I own currently is hard to give up and opens new worlds. I think you could have added where the past and current La Vagabond's numbers are for perspective. Also real cost on the jump from a mass produced vessel to a more high performance vessel without showing too much bias.

Riley, I’m a budding lady sailor! Hubs and I just purchased a Leopard 46 since it seems like a good balance of performance and living space. I’ve long been an airplane and sailplane pilot, so I dig the aerodynamic/hydrodynamic discussions. I’ve been trying to hunt down the polar info for our boat to no avail. Since weather and navigation are more of my expertise, this has fallen to me to get it all figured out! I guess I’ll be making more emails and phone calls. I love nerding out on this stuff, keep it coming! Your kiddo is super cute...ours are older...and sometimes less cute... 😬 Enjoy the years before they hit the teens.

Thanks for the great information. You are the first person I have seen/heard discussing these equations. Thanks for the education, the more information/facts we have the better decisions we can make... Great Job!
