My father in law is Russian, and he told me the story of how ships going down the Volga River had pilots come on board at certain times during their voyage armed with special maps dating back to Stalin times to assist in the safe navigation. These maps were jealously guarded as 'secret' by the pilots, so you imagine their horror when after peristroika and the opening of borders with the West, a Captain produced a Michelin map of the Volga which was far more detailed than that held by the official pilots! The advantages of satellite photographic topography!

As Victor Suvorov has noticed, one of the reasons for the 1941 German sucess was that USSR had no accurate maps of its own territory to give to its own troops although it had excellent maps of.... Germany. This tells us something of their pre-war plans, doesn't it?

Yet again the meme that the Soviets won the war by themselves. TL;DR it was a combined effort, the Allies wouldn't have made it without the Soviets and vice versa. Yes they absorbed circa 80% of German ground forces, but circa 80% of the Luftwaffe was kept busy by Allied bombing of Germany... The scale and impact of the bombing and the detriment it had to the German war effort cannot be over emphasised enough. At the height of the bombing, the RAF would send a stream of circa 1000 bombers to a single target in one night, whilst the USAAF kept them busy with similar numbers during the day. This is something the Soviets had absolute no capability to do, being entirely consumed by their efforts in the ground war. It was 24 hours round the clock and anything of military importance in Western and Central Europe (factories, industrial output, railways, roads, bridges) etc. that could be of use to the Axis was absolutely obliterated. More civilians died in a single night raid on Dresden than during the whole of the Blitz on Britain. It got so bad that entire supply chains ceased to function... Most of Europe was starving and emaciated due to the food shortages, millions of civilians were displaced etc. it was absolute anarchy. Not to mention the countless millions of tons of fuel, munitions, and other war materials etc. that were sent to the Soviets by both the UK and US via the Artic Convoys. In total they received tens of thousands of vehicles (trucks, aeroplanes, tanks etc.) and then they immediately stabbed us in the back with the Cold War. Stalin was as bad as the Austrian man but for some reason he, and the Soviets, get a free pass in modern culture. What about the gulags, massacre of Poles at Katyn etc. etc. the list of Soviet atrocities matches those of the Axis blow for blow. They were partners of convenience and nothing more. As soon as the war ended they then decided to hold the world to ransom for 50 years with the Cold War.

Russian's didn't win WW2. The Americans did.

When Russia was invaded by Alexander the fraud, the yellow Horde of regular Russian Army responded by pushing the rotters back right to the coast of France. The Russians redid all the maps back then and named a lot of European geography with Russian names that remain today. So the English got their fine maps from the Russians.

Your statement maybe right but I can tell you the Paris (France) map at 5:25 is far from being exact : streets are missing, the Mint facing the Pont Neuf on the left bank is entirely obliterated (I was born on one of the surrounding street in 1948 and lived in the same till 2003 !…), passages through blocks are not mentioned (essential when we're talking military occupation) … Russians have been known to be sloppy… or was Paris not so strategically important ?…
