Family Guy Is Not About Dysfunctional Families

George Lopez returns, once-estranged daughter in tow, with a textbook family sitcom about the problems of a family that runs an adult-oriented video-store franchise. The problem is, he’s not very good at anything else, and that’s one way of getting out of the family business — where a man’s best friend becomes the new “pest” in his house.

What if Family Guy just never bothered telling us that Family Guy is about dysfunctional families?

Lopez, an Emmy Award-winning comic who plays the family patriarch Peter Griffin on the animated sitcom about Griffin, his wife Lois (Mindy Kaling) and daughter Lisa (Alexandra Chando), recently stopped by The Michael Jackson Museum in Los Angeles.

Kaling, 46, got the job after leaving her Comedy Central show 30 Rock, where she played the fictional character Liz Lemon. (Not surprisingly, she still plays Liz on the show when it isn’t airing.)

If Family Guy did a version of This Is Us, they’d probably have to change a lot of things.

I’ve been watching a lot of Family Guy lately, and it really has become a true reflection on our society that a show about a family, with a father in the forefront, is really just a family about dysfunctional families. As far as the creators are concerned, they’re not selling us on Peter’s dysfunctional family.

I had a feeling the show would be much more reflective than it was. I just hope they remember how important family is to us.

Family Guy is all about the dysfunctional. Peter and his wife are the ultimate product of a dysfunctional family. One might say their parenting, their marriages, and their family is a product of their own dysfunctional family.
