Serena Williams has lost in the final of the U.S. Open in New York. With a little more than an hour remaining in her second round-robin match against Venus Williams, Williams came out ahead. But the American was unable to hold off Serena’s serve. That led to a break point. She fired a backhand and won the game. She then did the same on the next game. Serena continued to hit winners, but Williams came back to win the set. That set gave Williams the set and a win. Williams then extended the set to a tiebreaker and lost. She followed with doubles wins over Carla Suarez Navarro and Conchita Martínez. Serena Williams took a 3-0 lead in the U.S. Open finals over Venus Williams. Williams led 3-0 in the first set of their second-round match. But Serena was unable to keep Williams off the next three occasions she broke serves to make it three sets. In the end, it was Williams’ first lost U.S. Open finals match to date. She was also the second of three years she missed the U.S. Open final because she withdrew.
